French Quarter

There are a number of ways a tree can be cut. The quality of the planks depends on the method of sawing. 'French Quarter' is a traditional technique, whereby the oak tree trunk is cut first lengthways into four parts. From each quarter of the trunk, planks are then sawn perpendicular to the growth rings. This produces solid, robust quarter-sawn planks which will keep their shape. Planks that are sawn at an angle to the growth rings have small flames and are known as 'faux quarter'-sawn planks. The modern method is to quarter-sawn planks over the length of the whole trunk. The quarter-sawn is found in the middle of the trunk and the faux quarter-sawn in the outer sections. Planks taken from the outer part are known as flat-sawn – they have long soft sections or flames and can warp more easily.
