Finishing

Vonder works with sustainable wood which is carefully selected, cut and dried. Most of the wood originates from northern Europe and North America. The most frequently used types of timber are oak, cherry, walnut, zebrawood, wenge and ebony.

The carpenter is responsible for the finishing, and this is done by hand. Choosing how a surface will be treated depends on the type of wood. By brushing it with hard steel or soft brass, the softer part of the wood is removed, resulting in deeper grains. These can be treated with chalk to give a ceruse effect. Bleaching, staining or applying an antique finish changes the colour whilst leaving the character of the wood intact. Oak and zebrawood are often treated in this way. Walnut, however, has its own characteristic colour which remains its hallmark.

Varnish is applied in a special dust-free cubicle. Various possibilities are available: matt, silk finish, gloss finish, French polish or a wax finish. Yellow Poplar or Magnoliaceae, which is a smooth and even type of wood, can be used for opaque painted wood.
